Climbing Stromboli is an unforgettable experience, for the extraordinary possibility of observing an active volcano from a very close distance. This type of volcanic activity -indeed defined “Strombolian”- expels incandescent lava fragments (usually of modest dimensions) at regular intervals, in average about every 10-15 minutes.
The excursions depart from the centre of the village, with groups climbing up the slopes of the volcano all the way to the top at 918mts. After a long stop on the sides of the crater, the group walks back down to sea level. The descent takes place along a stretch of fine volcanic ashes, a highly evocative path that may resemble a moon landscape.
The climb has to be considered of low difficulty. To confront it, it is necessary to be in good health conditions, be used to hiking, and have the determination to reach the summit. People with heart issues, asthma and strong fear of heights are advised against the excursion. Pregnant women cannot climb the volcano until their third month of pregnancy.
The price of the excursion is 28€ per person, 25€ for children up to 14 years. Discounted prices are available for groups of more than 10 people or large families. Children of 7 years and above may climb the volcano provided that they are well used to hiking.
