Children 6 years or older are allowed to climb to the craters on condition that they are used to hike. The trek on the volcano is an unforgettable experience for kids: motivated by the goal of reaching the top to see volcanic explosions from close distance, the climb helps them to develop tenacity and endurance.
After the stop on the summit -200mts away from the five active craters- and the show of the volcano, there are still 2 hours to walk back to the village. Children are always amused during the initial chunk of the descent: having to jump in the sandy slopes and to use the headlamp they hardly feel bored or tired. After that, there are still 30-40 minutes of hiking in the vegetation before reaching the village; in this last section it might be necessary to motivate and encourage children to keep up till the end.
Suggestions to prepare kids for the hike:
- A light but nutritious lunch Rest in the hot hours before the excursion
- Avoid long exposure to sun before the hike Bring an extra T-shirt
- Snacks such as fresh fruit, nuts and dried fruit, cereal bars
- Avoid salty snacks, soft drinks and chocolate in summer
